TAUNTON, Mass. — A dog was rescued and treated for injuries after it was attacked with a machete late Monday evening, according to Taunton police.

Police say a woman was also injured in the attack when she tried to intervene.

Around 10:30 p.m., police say they started getting 911 calls about a man attacked a dog with a machete on Church Street.

When police showed up on scene, they said they found people tending to the injured dog. It had two large lacerations on the neck and back.

Police say the dog was adopted from the Taunton animal control shelter.

The woman walked to the emergency room before officers arrived on scene, police said. The woman refused to speak to officers at the hospital.
