Police: Child accidentally hit, seriously injured by father's car in Rutland

RUTLAND, Mass. — A child is fighting for his life after police he was accidentally run over by his father.

The little boy suffered serious injuries in the driveway of his Campbell Street home in Rutland Friday afternoon, according to police.

Massachusetts State Police are on scene in Rutland investigating the incident, but it appears the father ran over the child in a horrible accident.

Boston 25 News was there as investigators were taking measurements in that driveway. We could see toys and a bicycle there.

We don’t know exactly how it happened, but the family has a long, circular driveway. And those toys were right at the edge of the driveway, which is where it appears that's where the child was struck.

Police said once the father realized what happened, he put the boy in his vehicle and started driving to get help.

He called police and met up with an ambulance in Holden.

That ambulance took the child all the way to Worcester's UMass medical center.

There is no official word on the boy’s condition.
