Police chase in North Reading ends with crash, driver taken to hospital

NORTH READING, Mass. — A police chase in North Reading ended with a crash that left the suspect’s car upside down in the middle of the roadway.

Police say the 67-year-old man was blocking traffic on Route 28 at the intersection of Route 62 at 6:30 p.m.

An officer said that as he approached the vehicle he saw the man screaming, pulling his hair, and “exhibiting bizarre behavior.”

The man then drove off and officers followed him for more than a mile at varying speeds. Officers say the man was driving erratically and swerving across the road narrowly missing several utility poles before he sped up, veered off the road and crashed into a pole.

After the crash, the driver was rescued by police and taken to an area hospital.

The man’s name has not been released, but police said he will face multiple charges.
