Police chase after armed robbery ends with crash, 2 arrested

WALPOLE, Mass. — Police said a chase that began after a robbery in Norwood ended with a crash in Walpole, injuring an officer.

Two suspects were wanted after an armed robbery at Central Market on Washington Street in Norwood.

A woman working behind the counter was robbed with a Taser. She's a mother of two and said

she wasn't going to let the suspects take her hard earned money.

“He just jumped in and over. He said it's a robbery. I just started screaming,” Marcy said. “He tried to tase me and I had a coat on, so I didn't feel anything. I went after him, which I shouldn't have.”

That was around 6 p.m. One of the suspects punched Marcy and grabbed the money before running outside and taking off in a waiting pickup truck.

Police in Norwood and Walpole were able to chase the truck through several neighborhoods before the driver crashed in front of Stewart Canter's home.

“I heard the sirens, all kinds of sirens cops coming and I don't know what happen. Exciting, you know, there are about 10 cops in the front,” he said.

The truck had a snowplow attached to the front, which police said slowed the vehicle and may have caused the operator to lose control.

When the truck crashed into a tree, two other cars were also involved, including a Walpole Police Cruiser.

Police said they even found what appears to be a gun underneath the truck.

“We haven't processed it. We don't know if it's an authentic weapon or not,” Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael said.

Marcy said she learned an important lesson that she wants everyone to remember.

“My first instinct was not to give him the money. I work very hard. I have to work a lot to make a little bit,” she said. “It's tough, I'm shaky, but it's something for us to be aware that this will happen to anybody.”

Two suspects were taken into police custody and one Walpole police officer was hospitalized with chest injuries but is expected to recover.
