Police catch reckless motorcyclist on Route 139

RANDOLPH, Mass. (AP/MyFoxBoston.com) - A motorcyclist police say has been flying on highways around greater Boston at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour and racing down breakdown lanes to evade police for several weeks has been arrested.

Twenty-nine-year-old Daniel Rebello of Somerset pleaded not guilty in Quincy District Court to charges including motor vehicle assault on a police officer, racing, driving with a suspended license, and failing to stop for police.

Rebello was arrested Tuesday morning in Randolph after being spotted hiding behind a tractor-trailer in a parking lot, minutes after police say he was seen speeding along Route 24, making sudden lane changes, traveling in the median and even traveling south in a northbound lane.

Police had already issued an arrest warrant for him after a high speed chase in Dartmouth in July. Rebello allegedly failed to show up for court, so his license was revoked indefinitely.

Multiple police departments have reported seeing Rebello and his bright yellow Suzuki behaving dangerously on sometimes congested roadways.

State law prohibits police from pursuing speeding motorcyclists for safety reasons. So instead, authorities started a social media campaign in hopes of tracking down Rebello.

In court Tuesday, Rebello's public defender asked the judge to keep an open mind about his client, saying he had served in the Navy for two years and also spent time in Iraq for a construction contractor.

Rebello then stated he would rather represent himself going forward, rather than use a court appointed attorney.

A judge set bail at $10,000, but revoked his bail for driving charges in New Bedford and ordered him held for 60 days.

Rebello is slated to appear in Quincy District Court on Nov. 11 and in New Bedford District Court on Dec. 12.
