SOUTHWICK, Mass. (AP) — The pilot of a small single-engine plane that flipped over while making an emergency landing in a western Massachusetts field escaped with barely a scratch.
Authorities say the Cessna registered to JHT Aircraft LLC out of Wilmington, Del. and piloted by John Tonelli made the landing in a residential neighborhood in Southwick at about noon Monday.
Michael Morriss saw the plane was in trouble and was first on the scene.
He tells The Westfield News he pulled over as the pilot climbed out. No one else was on board. Tonelli told Morriss he was flying from Rhode Island and called Bradley International Airport after losing power because of a problem with his fuel transfer switch.
Tonelli had a small scratch on his nose.
Federal transportation officials are investigating.
