Plan proposed to add tolls on roads surrounding Boston

BOSTON — A plan to raise money for state transit systems could leave drivers footing the bill.

State Sen. Thomas McGee is proposing adding tolls on major roads surrounding Boston.

It would include parts of the Expressway, I-95, Route 1 and Route 2.

McGee said the move would help cut down on congestion and make roadways more fair.

The Lynn Democrat said drivers north of Boston have to pay tolls when heading into the city, but people coming from the south can drive in for free.

Money raised by the proposed tolls would go toward improving roads, bridges and MBTA services.
