Phone scammer posing as trooper to get people's money

BOSTON — State Police are warning residents after several reports of a hoax telephone calls appearing to be from the State Police South Boston Barracks.

State Police said the call origin was 617-740-7710, the State Police South Boston Barrack's number. When the call recipients answered, they were told to hold for an officer regarding a complaint or warrant that had been issued against them. The "officer" then said the person needed to pay to resolve the issue and said to meet a local shopping center.

The scammers are using technology to make the South Boston Barrack's number show up, but they are totally fake.  Anyone receiving calls like these, or calls of any similar nature, should immediately hang up.

State Police said no police department will ever call someone to tell them there is a warrant or complaint against them, and no police department will ever ask for any amount of money to be turned over to it.

Anyone who gets this call should report it to the local department.
