Pete Frates honored at St. John's Prep

DANVERS, Mass. -- A tip of the cap to the man who inspired the country and began the ice bucket challenge.

Pete Frates is in a league of his own, and now he has a baseball diamond of his own at his high school alma mater.

The baseball diamond at St John’s Prep is now dedicated to the high school baseball standout who later went to play at Boston College.

His number 3 Eagles baseball jersey was also retired, the first time that’s ever happened at the Prep school.

In addition, he was named this year’s distinguished alumnus.

Pete’s battle with ALS has been inspiring and will continue to be inspiring to all athletes who hear his story.

“When I come down here I look and I think about this disease and everything that it takes away from the patient and the family, it is such a devastating disease. It tries to take away everything. I know when I come to this field that it’s trying to take away my memories because Pete was a big strapping athlete that would be in center field and come running off that field waving at me, jumping over the baseline because he was a superstitious baseball player. But I come here and it just reaffirms that this disease will never take my memories away,” Pete’s mother Nancy Frates said.
