Suspect arrested after allegedly stabbing ER nurse in Southbridge

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. — A Southbridge nurse was stabbed by an emergency room patient Wednesday morning.

Harrington Hospital officials say around 10:15 a.m., a nurse was stabbed by a patient in the Southbridge emergency department. The patient, later identified as 24-year-old Conor O'Regan, fled the emergency room after the stabbing.

The nurse, who was seriously injured, was treated in the ER, stabilized and airlifted to UMass Medical Center where she was set to undergo surgery.

O'Regan was later apprehended by the Southbridge Police on Main Street and is facing charges of aggravated assault and battery with a weapon and assault with intent to murder.

District Attorney Joseph Early said they don't have a motive at this stage of the investigation.

"Based on the way the defendant moved...attacked, we will be moving for a mental health evaluation tomorrow," said Early.

O'Regan is set to appear in court in Worcester Thursday morning.
