18-year-old drowns after falling off Weeks Bridge in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An 18-year-old from Georgia lost his life after jumping into the Charles River in Cambridge.

Friends and classmates left flowers and candles in honor of Tyler Greene, who lost his life at the Weeks footbridge Friday night, as reported on FOX25 News at 6.

As reported on FOX25 News at 10, state police say the Harvard summer school student from Georgia had been participating in a tradition among students when he jumped from the footbridge not far from campus.

“It’s a tradition to jump off the bridge and during this whole 7-week program a lot of people have been posting themselves jumping off on Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, and it seemed a lot of fun," said Emily Hartman, a summer school student.

Witnesses say Greene went into the water off the Weeks footbridge in Cambridge and came up with his arms flailing before he went under again around 8:45 p.m. Friday.

But something went wrong when Greene began struggling in the Charles River, his arms flailing in the air before he disappeared. Divers would locate his body 25 minutes later. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Greene had recently graduated high school outside Atlanta, and that's where he leaves behind his grieving family.
