Pellham police investigating after barbed wire found on popular trail

PELLHAM, N.H. — Police in Pelham are looking for whoever strung up barbed wire across a popular trail.

No one was injured, but police told Boston 25 News reporter Jacqui Heinrich that it was definitely intentional and aimed at hurting people.

“Whether it be someone on a bicycle, someone walking or running, or someone riding on an ATV or a dirt bike. Those vehicles are not allowed in the area but there are times people use them and it could be detrimental, could be catastrophic,” Police Sgt. Glen Chase said. “It would hit them in the chest area depending on their speed.”

To make matters worse the wire was hung just around a bend, so if someone rounded the corner quickly, they wouldn’t have time to see it.

“We don’t know if it’s somebody that’s unhappy with some of the activities are going on,” Chase said.

Neighbors are unsettled that someone would go to such trouble to harm somebody right in their back yards.

“Scary, scared you know, scared for the people that actually use the trail. l hopefully they’ll notify enough people and they’ll be cautious,” neighbor Diane McLennan said.

Police think that wire was put there between Thursday and Sunday of last week. If you have information, call them at 603-635-2411.

Right now the incident is being investigated as reckless conduct, although if someone is identified the could face more severe charges.
