PEABODY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Peabody man was held on $50,000 bail Friday for his alleged connection to a fatal early morning car crash.
Michael J. Fowler, 38, is charged with motor vehicle homicide OUI and negligent operation, second OUI Offense; and leaving the scene of personal injury and death.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred on Walnut Street just after 12:30 a.m. Friday. Investigators arrived to the scene to find a Hyundai had crashed into a parked flatbed tow truck.
The victim, 31-year-old Daniel Walker, of Peabody, was pronounced dead at the scene. A police report says the impact of the crash partially decapitated the 31-year-old.
An EMT tending to Walker told police he witnessed a man get out of the driver's side of the car and flee the scene on foot when he drove up to the crash. The man, later identified as Fowler, was found a short time later on a nearby street. Police say he was taken back to the scene of the crash where he failed a field sobriety test.
Fowler was arrested and transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries before being returned to police custody.
Investigators say Fowler was charged with operating under the influence in the past. That case was continued without a finding in 2010.
Fowler is scheduled to appear in court again on June 19.
