Pats' Vereen to miss eight weeks

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- The New England Patriots have placed running back Shane Vereen on injured reserve with a designation to return.

The move means Vereen must miss eight weeks before he is eligible to play in a game. He was injured in Sunday's 23-21 win over the Buffalo Bills. He had a small break in his left wrist and underwent surgery on Monday, Fox Sports reported. The Patriots said he missed practice on Monday and Tuesday with a wrist injury.

Vereen rushed for a career-high 101 yards and gained 58 on seven receptions in the opener.

The Patriots re-signed tight end Matthew Mulligan, who joins Michael Hoomanawanui as the team's only healthy tight ends.

They also made two practice squad moves, signing defensive lineman A.J. Francis and releasing wide receiver Quentin Sims.
