Owner charged after allegedly dragging dog behind vehicle

LOWELL, Mass. — The owner of a 2-year-old pit bull has been charged with cruelty to animals after allegedly dragging the dog behind his truck.

Lowell Police said that he owner, 60-year-old Timothy Nicholas, told officers he had tied the dog to his van and forgot it was there. Witnesses say he dragged the dog a half-mile before stopping.

“The dog initially was running alongside of the van but obviously the van sped up to a point where the dog could no longer keep up,” Lowell Police Capt. Timothy Crowley said.

The dog suffered severe injuries to its paws, legs and stomach and underwent emergency surgery at Wignall Animal Hospital.

“He's going to be under anesthesia for the rest of the week because they have to constantly have to take the dressings off and clean them back up,” Crowley said.

Nicholas will be charged with felony animal cruelty.
