Over $300K raised at Boston walk for multiple sclerosis

BOSTON — Over 1,500 people walked in Boston Sunday to raise over $300,000 for research into a devastating nerve disease.

About 12,000 people are affected by multiple sclerosis in Massachusetts. It cuts off the connection between the brain and the body with numerous symptoms including numbness, tingling, and blindness.

The cause of MS is still unknown which is why members of the organization say things like Walk MS are necessary.

The 3.5 mile walk started around 9 a.m. at Boston University’s Nickerson Field and finished at the same location.  The event is one of many ways the National MS Society brings together communities of people who are impacted.  Friends, family and co-workers of people with MS gather in over 500 walks a year to raise money.

“Walk MS is a joyous gathering with a wonderful ‘we’re in this together’ feeling,” said Cyndi Zagieboylo, President and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. “Together, we are accelerating progress in making life-changing breakthroughs so that each person with MS can live her or his best life.”

Walk MS is a charity walk that started back in 1988 and has raised over $970 million to go towards treatment and care for MS.  This year, over 39 other Walk MS events took place in the country.
