One person dies, four injured in wrong-way crash in Salisbury

SALISBURY (AP) - A Lawrence man has been ordered held on $100,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty in connection with a fatal wrong-way crash on New Year's Eve.

The Essex District Attorney's office said 50-year-old Mikhael Sarkis was arraigned Wednesday at a Boston hospital on charges including felony motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence. If he makes bail, a judge ordered him to remain at home under electronic monitoring, avoid drugs and alcohol and submit to random drug and alcohol tests.

Prosecutors say 41-year-old Donna Bergeron of East Hampstead, N.H., was fatally injured riding in Sarkis's car. The 11:20 p.m. crash happened as he was driving north on the southbound side of the Gillis Bridge that carries Route 1 over the Merrimack River.

Sarkis and another passenger were injured, as was the driver of the other car.
