One injured in plane crash near Marshfield airport

MARSHFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – One person was taken to a hospital following a plane crash near the George Hollowfield Airport in Marshfield Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 3:45 p.m.

The Marshfield Fire Department said the pilot, 68-year-old Douglas Olson of Yarmouth Port, had just taken off in a Maul M-5 aircraft, noticed something was wrong and was returning to land when the plane hit some tree tops and crashed nose down.

Video from SkyFox showed the plane was heavily damaged and appeared to have sparked a fire that burned a large area around the crash.

Fire officials said Olson was able to get himself out of the plane before it was engulfed in flames. A construction worker who was working nearby helped Olson get out of the woods.

"He got as close as he possibly could to him through the woods and then, from my understanding, put him on his shoulders and carried him out to the road next door where police and fire engines were waiting for him," said neighbor Ashley Roberts.

He was taken to South Shore Hospital with minor leg injuries.

The Marshfield Fire Chief told FOX 25's Erica Ricci that a plane crashed in a nearly identical manner in 2007. The pilot in that crash was also able to walk away.

The FAA will investigate the crash.
