Officer's leg broken while trying to break up Worcester high school melee

WORCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A Worcester police officer's leg was broken as he and another officer tried to arrest a man involved in a melee Monday at North High School.

According to the Worcester Police Department Facebook page, police said the melee came on the heels of a large fight that happened at the school on Friday and ended with three juvenile being arrested.

On Monday, as students left school for the day, police said a 15-year-old boy walked by officers and started to yell profanities. Police spoke to him and he ended up apologizing. But then 40 to 50 teenagers surrounded the officers, who told them to stay back. The group refused and started a chant to free the teen the officers were speaking to.

Several officers arrived at the scene and ordered the crowd back. According to police, 18-year-old Emmanuel Natal was clenching his fists, yelling and swearing at officers. Police also said 17-year-old Jasmine Hudson was yelling at police, saying she didn't have to leave.

According to police, an officer was punched twice in the chest by Natal, but then tackled to the ground by other officers. As Natal was resisting arrest, 17-year-old John Clough allegedly jumped on an officer's back. Police said Clough fought with two officers. One of the officers broke his leg in two places.

The unidentified officer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Police say his injury will keep him out of work for several weeks.

Police said a 15-year-old boy acted aggressively towards a female officer. As officers approached that teen, Hudson allegedly began punching one of them in the face. That's when police said a 16-year-old girl started punching the same officer in the back of the head. Hudson was then placed under arrest.

Elize Rivera, 37, the mother of one of the teens, intervened and punched a female officer in the arm, police said. Rivera was arrested.

Hudson, Natal, Clough, Rivera and her daughter are facing several charges. The 15-year-old boy was charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
