Officer’s dash cam captures near-collision with sedan

PELHAM, N.H. – A Pelham, N.H. police officers dashboard camera was rolling when an accused drunk driver crossed the center lane and hit a sedan before nearly hitting a police cruiser.

Pelham Police said that officer Brian Barbato was driving on Bridge Street near the Hammer Sign Company when a car in front of him was hit by an oncoming car.

Barbato's dash cam showed the oncoming car then swerve toward his cruiser. Barbato had to veer to the right to avoid being hit.

He quickly turned his cruiser around and stopped the sedan.

Police said Stephen Swett, 32, of Lowell, was driving the car. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, having an open container of alcohol in his car and crossing the yellow line.

Swett suffered some injuries to his face but refused treatment. The driver and passenger in the first car were not injured. Their car suffered front-end damage.

Swett will appear in court on April 8.
