Nurse facing charges after police say she injected drunk teen

GLOUCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A Gloucester nurse is facing several charges after police say she injected a drunk teenage girl with anti-nausea medication.

Julie Leonard, 36, was arrested Sunday in Gloucester, The Gloucester Times reported. Leonard is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, furnishing alcohol to minors, reckless endangerment to children and contributing to their delinquency.

Julie Leonard was arraigned in Gloucester District Court on Monday. She was released on personal recognizance and was ordered not to have contact with children other than her own.

According to the newspaper, the teen had fallen ill after an underage drinking party at the woman's home on Nov. 30. The 17-year-old daughter of Julie Leonard and Mark Leonard allegedly invited three teens and her 23-year-old boyfriend to her parents' house. The police report stated that the teens and the 23-year-old were allegedly drinking vodka, beer and tequila while at the home.

The police report also said Mark Leonard came home around 9:30 p.m. and started drinking beer with his daughter and her friends, and smoking marijuana with his daughter and her boyfriend. Julie Leonard got home at about 11 p.m. and was drinking red wine, according to the report.

One of the teens told Julie Leonard she felt sick and asked to be taken to the hospital after staying at the home overnight. Julie Leonard then allegedly used a hypodermic needle to give the teen an injection of what is believed to be Compazine, an anti-psychotic drug that is also used to treat nausea. According to the report, the teen felt better after the injection.

A mother of one of the teens found out about what happened and contacted Mark Leonard the next day.

Julie Leonard works at the Kindred Den-Mar Nursing Home in Rockport. She has been suspended from her position.

Julie Leonard is due back in Gloucester District Court on Feb. 8 for a pre-trial hearing.

Mark Leonard was not arrested, but is facing a criminal complaint for furnishing alcohol to minors, reckless endangerment of children, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
