Norwood woman accused of beating kids with electrical cord

NORWOOD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Norwood woman is facing assault and battery charges after being accused of assaulting her own children.

Investigators accused 31-year-old Bassema Shuman of whipping her 12-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter with an electrical cord. Pictures presented in court on Monday showed marks on the bodies of her children.

Other children in the family told investigators that she had abused other children in the past. Shuman was previously charged with assault and battery in a domestic violence case, but the charge was dismissed.

Shuman's attorney said she was a dedicated, devoted mother whose life revolved around her children. The family pediatrician said the children were well taken care of and had no signs of fear toward their mother.

Bail was set at $1,500 cash. The Department of Children and Families is investigating.

Shuman will appear in court again on Feb. 13.
