Northborough residents told family member held hostage in phone scam

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Northborough police are warning residents of a phone scam in which a caller with a Boston area code claims to be holding a family member hostage.

The Metrowest Daily News reports the caller tells the victim their family member has been in a car accident and that they are being held hostage. The caller then tells the victim to send them $1,000 to prevent their family member from getting hurt.

Investigators tell the newspaper the suspect has called from a 617 area code in the most recent cases. Anyone who receives a call of this nature is asked to call police.
