LITCHFIELD, N.H. -- Investigators in Litchfield are working to get a search warrant on a car they believe was used in a string of mail thefts across the community and potentially surrounding towns.
The two-door silver Chevy Cobalt was seized from a Circle K parking lot in Hudson on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said they were led to the car after getting a call about a suspicious vehicle with an erratic driver.
When officers arrived and looked into the car, they say they saw a lot of clutter. That reportedly included mail that doesn’t appear to belong to the man who was behind the wheel.
In recent days, Litchfield Police have received more than a dozen complaints from people reporting missing mail and damaged mailboxes.
Police believe whoever has been potentially snatching the mail has also been knocking down mailboxes in what appears to be a reckless crime spree targeting personal information.
“There’s tax return season there’s identity theft there’s people’s personal information. It opens up a whole can of worms,” Litchfield Police Sgt. Heath Savage said.
Investigators plan to of notify the US Postal Inspector on Wednesday.
Police believe parts of the car may have fallen off in different locations, and they’re asking anyone who notices damage to their mailbox to contact them.
The man who was driving the car, a Manchester resident, would not speak with investigators on Tuesday. As of right now, police say they do not have probable cause to make an arrest.
