Newtown marks anniversary of Sandy Hook school shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. — It has been four years since the country was rocked when gunfire erupted in a Connecticut elementary school.

Adam Lanza, 20, first shot and killed his mother, then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School, opened fire and killed 20 children and six staff members before killing himself.

The town doesn't hold an official memorial, but a prayer service will be held,

A counseling center will also have extended hours.

Town employees have been instructed to not do any work between 9:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. to mark the time the shootings happened.

Flags across the state are also to be flown at half-staff to remember the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.
