Newton student wins national constitutional speech contest

Indianapolis, IN. — A Newton high school student won an American Legion constitutional speech contest and received an $18,000 scholarship on Sunday.

It was a “love for speech, politics and our country” that encouraged Newton winner Andrew Steinberg.  “They all converged in one opportunity with this competition, and I can say with great coaching and a little bit of luck that I’m happy to have made it as far as I did,” said Steinberg in an interview with The American Legion.

Steinberg is a junior at Roxbury Latin School who was sponsored by Post 440.

Steinberg was one of three finalists in the contest.  The students went through two rounds of competition on Sunday.

Robyn E. Anzulis of Woodbine, Mass. placed second with a $16,000 scholarship and Chad C. Durante of Follansbee, W. Va. placed third with a $14,000 scholarship.

The goal of the contest is to encourage young Americans to practice their communications skills and study the U.S. Constitution.

The competition took place in Indianapolis, the American Legion headquarter city.
