New TSA director says Boston is one of the safest airports

He’s only been on the job a week, but the new head of the TSA is already flying all over the country.

David Pekoske was at Boston Logan Thursday and spent the day hearing what works best at the airport.

“Airport security effectiveness is our number one job,” he told Boston 25 News’ Blair Miller.

He also recognized the Logan TSA employees who found two guns on two different occasions in the last month. So far this year, four weapons have been confiscated at Logan.

Pekoske said Boston is one of the safest airports.

“Boston has a long history of being on the leading edge of security and being one of our very best airports for partnerships across the board,” he said.

The other big piece to that is getting people through security quickly, without compromising safety.

In the next month, Pekoske wants to come up with what he calls "the checkpoint of the future." There will be more technology to scan people and bags and with fewer barriers that slow down the process.

"Ideally, somebody could literally walk at a normal speed to get through security at some point in the future," he said.

From here, the TSA director will travel to airports all around the country getting feedback on what works and what doesn’t.

Any changes he plans to make will be put in place as soon as possible.
