New development in Scituate raises concerns over impact on water supply

SCITUATE, Mass. — New homes could built where an old military facility resides, but it has homeowners in the area concerned there won’t be enough water to go around.

OId buildings from the US Army training facility days have been abandoned in Scituate for decades. After years of being an eyesore, the property may now be given a new life.

A developer announced plans to build 142 town homes and 10 single family homes on either side of Hatherly Road near Scituate Harbor. The town homes would be a 55-and-over living community. 10 homes on the outskirts of the living community would be available for families.

The first public hearings for the plans begin next month.

Paul Kukstis lives in Scituate and is embracing the new development.

"We're happy to finally see it get developed you know it's been an eyesore, not just for us but for the whole town," said Kukstis.

But not everyone in town is happy about the new homes.

Last summer, Scituate had a severe demand on its water supply after the reservoir got so low everyone had to stop using it.

Some locals are concerned that the new project will cause a repeat of the water demand problems from last year.
