New Bedford stabbing victim dies

NEW BEDFORD (AP) - A New Bedford man police say was stabbed by another city man he met on a telephone chat line has died.

A spokesman for the Bristol District Attorney's office says 25-year-old Robert Sylvia died at Rhode Island Hospital on Tuesday.

Authorities allege Sylvia was stabbed in the chest by 28-year-old Luis Torres on Sept. 18 after an argument. Police tell The Standard Times that Sylvia and his roommate met the suspect on a chat line and Torres stayed in their apartment for days.

Torres was apprehended in New Hampshire the day after the stabbing. He is being held without bail while he fights extradition. He faces charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges, but those charges could be upgraded.
