New Bedford officer assists in New Year's Day delivery

NEW BEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A New Bedford couple has Officer Nathan Monteiro to thank for the successful delivery of their baby girl early New Year's Day.

Nativia Jones and Brian Rivera welcomed Amyiah Angel Jones-Rivera to the world around 3:31 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The birth was difficult, and the baby was initially unresponsive, but when Officer Monteiro arrived at the couple's apartment before paramedics, he acted quickly. He unwrapped the umbilical cord from around the baby's neck and swiped the baby's mouth with his finger, reports The Standard Times.

A few seconds later the baby began to cry.

Jones told the newspaper that she went the hospital around 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve, but was sent home. Around 3 a.m., she went into labor and knew the baby was coming out fast.

Officer Monteiro arrived in the nick of time and coached the couple through the delivery. Although he had received some training and has three children of his own, it was Officer Monteiro's first time delivering a baby.
