New Bedford man killed in overnight crash on Route 140

NEW BEDFORD (FOX25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A New Bedford man was killed during a single-car crash that occurred early Sunday morning on Route 140 in New Bedford.

Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash around 12:28 a.m. and found the car on the southbound side of the highway, south of Exit 5.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the car, which was traveling northbound, went off the roadway to its left, rolled over, and went through the median strip before coming to final rest on the southbound side. Troopers are still investigating what caused the car to leave the roadway.

The passenger, 53-year-old John Pinho, of New Bedford, was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the operator, 49-year-old Mark Medeiros, of New Bedford, was transported by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Speed and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
