(MyFoxBoston.com) – Accused of heavy drug use and toeing the line for months while a member of the New England Patriots, a new article is allegedly shedding new light on Aaron Hernandez's downward spiral.
Since the murder of Odin Lloyd, many people have been wondering why such a young and talented football player worth millions of dollars would risk losing it all. What was Hernandez thinking?
The Rolling Stone article suggests Hernandez may not have been thinking at all.
According to the magazine, Hernandez was a heavy drug user, saying his drug of choice was "angel dust."
Angel dust, or PCP, was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. It is extremely powerful and dangerous. The drug can lead to hallucinations, paranoia, and violent behavior.
In fact, Rolling Stone reports Hernandez was so paranoid he carried a gun wherever he went.
The magazine also talks about Hernandez and his relationship with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick was reportedly "infuriated" with Hernandez for missing practices and his "thug-life" behavior.
Despite a solid performance last season, the tight end was reportedly one screw-up away from being cut by the team.
Hernandez had a difficult upbringing in Bristol, Conn., and the report claims before his dad died in 2006, his mother cheated with a man Rolling Stone describes as a "violent drug-dealer." The man allegedly moved in with Hernandez's mother after his father's death.
Keep in mind Rolling Stone is the same publication that used what many consider a glamour shot of one of the accused Boston bombers on its cover.
As for the legal process, the case against Hernandez is now in Superior Court. Hernandez is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 6.
His lawyers maintain his innocence and say he will walk away.
