National Grid warns of payment scam

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — National Grid is warning customers of a scam that uses the utility's name.

The utility says scammers have called customers and claimed to be from National Grid. They then demand payment for what they say are past due electric accounts and say service will be cut if they don't pay immediately by phone.

In some cases, the utility says, the caller has claimed their meter needs to be replaced, and they must pay a large fee.

National Grid says it would never call a customer to demand immediate payment. It asks anyone who has received such a call to contact customer service.
