Voters on chose a judge's controversial decision to grant a convicted murderer's request for a taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgery as the most talked about local news story of 2012.

The state appealed Judge Mark Wolf's ruling that the surgery is the only adequate treatment for Michelle Kosilek's gender identity disorder.

Kosilek was named Robert when convicted of killing his wife in 1990.
