Multi-alarm fire tears through New Bedford home

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- More than a dozen people are homeless, but thankfully none were seriously injured, after a fire destroyed several homes in New Bedford.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. at a multi-family home on Granfrield Street.

“You could feel the heat 20, 50 feet away from there," witness Juan Ferrer said. “Scary, scary moment that’s for sure.”

As first responders battled the flames, the roof of the first building collapsed and the fire spread to a neighboring building.

“When I arrived there was just a massive amount of fire - the entire house was on fire from top to bottom," Fire Chief Juan Ferrer said.

All of the residents made it out of the building on their own, but three were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

“Fortunately, it’s 2 in the afternoon and not 2 a.m., so it’s the waking hours for the most part that makes our job easier - we still had guys in there so search and make sure no one was in there," Kruger said.
