10 injured after taxi crashes through pedestrians near Logan

BOSTON — Several people have been injured after a taxi ran into a group of people near Logan Airport, according to Mass. State Police.

Emergency responders told Boston 25 News 10 people were taken to hospitals with injuries.

Police said the crash happened at the Boston Logan taxi stand on Porter Street at Tomahawk Drive. Officials said a jumped the curb and hit several other drivers who were in the picnic table waiting area on a break.

Some of the victims, including this with more serious injuries, were taken to Mass. General Hospital, while others were taken to Tufts Medical Center, a police spokesperson said.

Kassaye Yilma was one of the victims taken to Tufts. When he was released he told Boston 25 News he couldn't believe what happened.

“I thought it was a plane or something. I turn around, the car start taking everybody out," he said.

The 56-year-old taxi driver behind the wheel at the time of the crash remained on scene to be interviewed by troopers. Police said the driver is "known to be a very nice gentleman."

"It appears all injured were fellow cab drivers," said Major Frank McGinn. "It does not appear there is any indication this was an intentional act, but it was a tragic accident."

Sources told Boston 25 News the operator appeared to have accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake.

The taxi hit a non-denominational worship center before being crashing into the picnic area where several drivers were waiting for fares or taking a break.

"We all get together, it's slow, Fourth of July weekend. We all wait at the line at the same time," Yilma said.
