MSP trooper allegedly assaulted an officer in CVS

A Massachusetts State Police trooper has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer at a local CVS.

The two sergeants were both off duty and did not know each other. Police say one accused the other of cutting in line - and then it escalated quickly.

State police Sgt. Brian Duffy - assigned to the Logan Airport Barracks - appeared in Plymouth District Court on Wednesday for the charges of assaulting an off duty Carver police officer.

Plymouth police say Duffy told them he was "inside of CVS attempting to buy some items for his wife for Valentine's Day." That's when he says an off duty Carver police officer started yelling to him that he just cut in line. The trooper told police he then "exchanged some words and profanities."

According to the police report, Duffy told investigators he was trying to go to the back of the line when the Carver officer blocked him and that's when he shoved him.

The report goes on to say the Carver police sgt. - who is 64 years old - fell to the ground. Duffy says the Carver sgt. "got up and came after him as he was trying to leave and remove himself from the situation."

The Carver sgt. told police he was trying to hold the trooper while telling the CVS clerk to call police.

"It's unfortunate but nobody likes to go through it but both people were very respectful to the investigation and unfortunately we are where we are today," said Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri.

Duffy is off duty; state police tell Boston 25 News a hearing is scheduled for this week to determine his status moving forward.
