Pepdjonovic was working a special construction detail on the Fore River Bridge when a female driver slammed into him.
"The woman that was involved in the accident was very distraught, she stayed on scene and she's been cooperative," said Chief Paul Keenan.
Police had temporarily shut down I-93 north to escort the ambulance to Boston Medical Center.
The Fore River Bridge was closed for accident reconstruction, but has since reopened.
