Mom thankful 7-year-old daughter is alive after pit bull attack

FITCHBURG, Mass. – A 7-year-old girl is in the hospital after she was nearly killed by a pit bull, her mother tells Boston 25 News.

The dog, which belongs to a family-friend, apparently attacked Gesenia Coss Monday night.

“The way I saw my daughter, I thought she wasn’t going to make it,” Gesenia Corales, the girl’s mother, said.

Corales spoke to Boston 25 News on FaceTime from the hospital in Worcester where she’s been by her daughter’s side for two days.

“She was covered in blood, she was just yelling, she was crying. When I picked her up, I felt like she came out of a pool of water,” Corales said.

The attack happened at a house on Academy Street in Fitchburg. The girl’s brother did everything he could to protect and save her.

“It was in a dark area, she was trying to defend herself. Her 15-year-old brother finally kicked the dog. That’s when the dog got off her,” Corales said.

Coss needed a total of 100 stitches, 40 in her back, 60 in her arm, but doctors say she will eventually be physically OK.

“Just give her the strength she needs to keep going,” Corales said.

The dog has been quarantined and is at a kennel. It will be put down in 10 days.

If all goes well, 7-year-old Coss should be able to go home tomorrow.
