Mom disgusted at mice, roach infestation in Framingham apartment

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — A local mom said she is fed up with the property management ignoring the rodent and roach infestation in her apartment.

"I was changing her diaper, there was a little baby roach about to crawl up on her,” said Kayla Diaz.

With a 2-year-old and a newborn, Diaz said her home is no place for an adult, much less a child.

"I have to come home and clean this floor before she walks around because sometimes there's poop laying around,” she said.

Diaz lives in the Georgetown Apartments in Framingham and has complained to the Board of Health after she says property management didn't take care of the mice and roaches.

When inspectors got on property, they found Diaz's apartment wasn't the only problem. FOX25 obtained citations for unsanitary conditions in four units across two buildings, ranging from roach and rodent activity to poor maintenance.

Inspectors wrote, "cabinets have holes around utility lines, missing backs, gaps between cabinets and the floor…these need to be sealed…gaps in bathroom cabinets appeared to be sealed with duct tape"

"The laundry room is disgusting, you're doing your laundry you've got bugs hanging over you, the windows are disgusting- it's just this whole place needs an update,” said Diaz.

And although the paperwork shows Georgetown Apartments had pest control treat the property and some repairs done, it didn't resolve the problem. The Board of Health mandated a second spray of Diaz's entire building, and some citations received a second warning.

Georgetown Apartments said they are working to take care of the issues.

"The buildings have been inspected and treated by a professional exterminator. Our team has sealed any potential entry points and repaired cabinetry. Unfortunately there have been instances of open food containers in some of the apartments which can be an attraction for rodents.”

"We're not ones to complain, but when it comes to roaches and mice crawling around, especially with two babies…I'm not going to pay $2,000 to live with rodents and roaches,” she said.

Diaz said she stopped paying rent as a way of protesting the conditions and now she’s being evicted.

However, she said she doesn’t care, but she doesn't want anyone else making the same mistake she did by moving in.

“The biggest mistake, I would never ever come back here, would never recommend it,” she said.

Georgetown Apartments also said they have been complying with the Board of Health and look forward to the next inspection.
