PALMER, Mass. (AP) - Town officials in Palmer say they are close to finalizing a host community agreement with Mohegan Sun for a $1 billion resort casino in the central Massachusetts town.
A deal could be signed by Wednesday and approved by the town council on Sept. 3. The agreement would also require approval from town voters in a referendum this fall.
Mohegan Sun will likely be in competition with two other proposals for the sole western Massachusetts casino license.
Springfield voters last month approved a host community agreement with MGM Resorts. Voters in West Springfield are scheduled to weigh in Sept. 10 on a proposal by Hard Rock to develop a casino at the Eastern States Exposition.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will make the final decision on who gets the casino license.
