MIT student to begin record-breaking flight around the world

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 19-year-old student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is spending his summer vacation in pursuit of a world record.

Matt Guthmiller wants to become the youngest person to ever circumnavigate the world on a solo flight.

"Flying was just kind of one of those things that I always wanted to do for as long as I can remember and a few years ago I finally started doing it," Guthmiller told FOX 25's Melissa Mahan.

The 19-year-old will start his journey in El Cajon, Calif. on Thursday and travel to his hometown of Aberdeen, SD. From there, Guthmiller will travel to places like the Azores, Cairo, Abu Dhabi, and Manila before ending his trip in Aberdeen on July 7.

Proceeds donated to Matt's trip will go to Code.org, a non-profit dedicated to making computer science education available in more schools.
