Milford selectman, Foxwoods sign casino agreement

MILFORD, Mass. (AP) - Connecticut-based Foxwoods and selectmen of the town of Milford, Mass., have signed a host community agreement for a proposed resort casino development.

The agreement signed Monday night was approved by the select board last week. It calls for Foxwoods to pay Milford $32 million up front, with payments of $31 million a year after. The town's voters also will have to approve the proposal before it can go to state gambling regulators.

Foxwoods is in competition with casino proposals in Everett and East Boston for the license that will be awarded for eastern Massachusetts.

Foxwoods is proposing a 980,000-square-foot development with 500 hotel rooms on a 187-acre plot at the intersection of Interstate 495 and Route 16.

Foxwoods says the $1 billion development would provide about 3,500 permanent jobs and about 3,000 construction jobs.
