Miami Dolphins release Chad Johnson following domestic assault charge

DAVIE, Fla. - Six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson has been released by the Miami Dolphins one day after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife.

Johnson was released on $2,500 bond earlier Sunday after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument in front of their home. Johnson was charged with simple domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

According to court documents, Johnson's wife, Evelyn Lozada, hid from him at a neighbor's home following an alleged altercation.

In the documents posted by TMZ, an investigating officer reports that Lozada was unpacking shopping bags from the couple's car when she found a Walgreen's receipt for condoms. The couple then engaged in an argument during which Johnson reportedly head-butted the reality TV star, causing a laceration to her forehead.

It is alleged that Lozada then fled the driveway to a neighbor's residence and waited for them to arrive home so that they could call police. During this time, Johnson began driving through the neighborhood looking for his wife.

Johnson claims that Lozada yelled an expletive and then head-butted him during the fight. He then drove around looking for her in attempts to calm her down.

The wide receiver was released from a Florida jail on Sunday on a $2,500 bond. He had been charged with domestic violence.

Johnson's defense attorney, Adam Swickle, says a no-contact order has been issued that prevents Johnson from contacting his wife, Evelyn Lozada.

Such orders are common in domestic violence cases. Swickle declined to comment further.

If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, though he could also receive community service, probation or anger management classes.

Lozada voiced plans to press charges against her husband to the arresting officer.
