Methuen man dies in Lawrence crash

LAWRENCE (AP) — A Methuen man died and two young women were hurt in a weekend car crash in Lawrence.

Police say 20-year-old Arnoldo Vargas was pronounced dead after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a utility pole at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. The women passengers, ages 19 and 20, were hurt but are expected to survive.

The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/TEfUeF ) reports that police seized a pickup truck that may have played a role in the accident.

Witnesses told police that Vargas' vehicle appeared to be speeding when he had to swerve to avoid the pickup truck, which then drove away from the scene.

Police tracked the truck down later in the day, but the owner has not been charged.
