MBTA: Green Line service restored after crews damage tunnel below Tremont Street

A small hole on Tremont Street lead to a day of delays for passengers riding the Green Line through downtown Boston.

A spokesman for the MBTA said Eversource crews, digging up Tremont Street amid utility work, apparently pierced the ceiling of the MBTA Green Line tunnel between Boylston and Park Street stations. As a result, service from Copley to Government Center was halted.

The initial announcement came just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday with the Arlington, Boylston, Park Street and Government Center stops all impacted.

A small hole on Tremont Street no larger than a person’s fist could be seen in plain sight from the sidewalk.  The MBTA reporting on its Twitter account that delays were more than 30 minutes throughout portions of the afternoon.

Robert Hanson and a college classmate were on their way to an assignment when they realized the doors to Boylston Station were locked due to the tunnel damage.

“It’s disconcerting”, Hansen said.

Just before 5:30 p.m., the MBTA announced that service had been restored between the Copley and Government Center stations. Road surface work continued past 6 p.m., though service was restored by that time, according to the T.

The MBTA had previously said that riders could use the Orange Line for alternate service.
