FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Wednesday morning will be the first real test of the winter for the commuter rail and MBTA. Things have gone wrong in the past, but officials are hoping some preventative steps taken overnight will help them.
The MBTA says it prepared for the cold in a variety of ways to avoid delays. The T stored some trains in underground tunnels overnight and the trains that couldn’t be stored in tunnels were run from time to time, to prevent freezing. As many buses as possible were kept in garages.

On the trains, workers drained air hoses to prevent moisture from building up inside.
Keolis, which runs the commuter rail for the MBTA, says it took steps to prepare, as well.
“We pre-position crews in case something does occur. But we also do track patrol and additional inspections to help reduce the chance of issues when the cold temperatures arrive,” said Tory Mazzola.
