MBTA driver's acts of kindness inspires others

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. — Every day, MBTA driver Debbie Crasco carries three gift bags with her on the 64 bus through Allston, Brighton and Cambridge.

“There's too much strife in this world right now, so many people are hurting, so many bad things people are doing to each other,” said Debbie Crasco.

Recently, she noticed a mom and three kids down on their luck that were riding her bus often. She believes they were homeless, and she would often drop them off at a hotel.

So Debbie, a part-time bus driver, spent hours and her own money shopping for little treats, like cracker jacks candy, to give to the three children.

“I just saw them as little angels, little sweethearts,” she said.

She bought a few other things and put together care packages for the kids. She hasn’t seen them for a while, so she’s keeping them behind her seat, just in case.

“I would love to see them, I really would. So I could give them their loot!” said Debbie.

Debbie's generosity caught the eye of a passenger, who posted about how inspiring Debbie is on Facebook.

“I was immediately taken aback by her generosity. It's not every day that you do these things but it's very small random acts of kindness. That can make a huge impact on someone's life,” said Samuel Gebru.

What she’s done isn’t a surprise for her husband. In the past, Debbie has bought groceries for strangers and bought a homeless man shoes when she noticed he didn’t have any.

“I'm hopeful that you know it sparks a little compassion in everybody,” said Donald Crasco.

“I think we need to try to do something nice for each other on a daily basis,” said Debbie.

Debbie actually calls herself selfish because she gets joy out of doing acts of kindness.

In the meantime, she’s waiting for the mother and her children, whose names she doesn’t even know, hoping to give them their gifts because, in her words, they’re special kids.
