MBTA approves alcohol ads to boost revenue

BOSTON — Looking to make up for falling revenues, the MBTA will begin allowing alcohol ads in stations in December.

The move was approved by the governing board, who changed a policy that’s been in place against the ads for five years.

From December to March, the T will allow alcohol ads in certain stations as a test run. But stations that have a high percentage of student pass traffic – like Forest Hills, Roxbury Crossing and JFK/UMASS – will be restricted from displaying alcohol ads.

The ads were banned in 2012 out of concern for the number of minors on the T being subjected to alcohol ads. However, the change could open up a large revenue stream for the transit system.
