MassPort considering monorail project to link Logan terminals

BOSTON — A billion dollar proposal to help reduce road traffic at Logan Airport would see a monorail built linking all the airport's terminals.

It's in the early stages, but if approved, it would ferry travelers to and from terminals, the Blue Line, parking lots and the car rental center.

MassPort officials plan to hire a consultant to help advise it on building this monorail and to see if it would work.

Officials are modeling the idea off airports like JFK and LAX that already have similar systems.

MassPort’s chief executive said they could see a transit line stopping at each of Logan’s terminals as a more comprehensive solution to help with the surge of passengers and international flights.

Officials cautioned it would take at least 10 years to build the monorail and it could cost a billion dollars or more.

If they study concludes the project would be too expensive or the plan just won't work for the space a Logan Airport, MassPort says it would reconsider a moving sidewalk or walkway. Another option would be to build a small transit connection between the T station and terminal E.
